Getting to know a little about me
Hello everyone, my name is Kourtney Bellamy and I am a college student at El Camino college. I was born in the city of Pasadena; however, I was raised in Los Angeles for most of my life. I was brought up in South Central with a single mother and two older sisters. My older sisters' names are Kay Kay, and Destiny. I am very loved and spoiled by them both. My mother name is Brenda; she is both my role model and best friend. My talent and hobbies are singing and writing poems. I am a Christian, so I do have strong faith and beliefs in God. I do not attend church all the time but I do try to go as much as I can. I love the family and life that I was given and would not trade it for anything in the world. My biggest goals I plan to accomplish in life are becoming a social worker, wife, and wonderful mother. The first goal I need to focus on right now is getting through college. In order for me to achieve my college goal I need Ten Skills You Really Need To Succeed In School. Two important chapters I learned
One of the topics that I learned from the John Langan book was chapter 4 "Managing your Time". I work 32 hours a week while I'm currently in school and sometimes it gets really hard for me to make time to do homework or study. So I began following some steps to manage my time a lot better which are: 1. Use your outline course, 2. Keep a large monthly calendar, and 3. Make a daily "To Do" list (Langan 75-78). When all my classes began I was given an outline on a syllabus of what we'll be going over and doing for the course. By looking back and reading over each of my class syllabus it gives me an idea of what I need to ready myself, and plan on doing in the class. The syllabus shows all the assignment, projects, and test that will be happening and the due date for each of them. I also got a calendar in my phone and began putting the dates for when my assignment was given and the days they must be turned in. Each day I take a quick glance at my calendar so I won't forget or miss any work to be turned in or any test dates that I need to prepare for. The last thing I do is make a list for how I'm going to begin my day with school work and work by writing it down on a sheet of paper. From the moment I wake up, I plan out the time I'm going to do my homework, how many hours I'm going to take out of my day to study, and when I start and end my work shift. All of these techniques taught me how to make going to school and work a lot easier for myself.
Another thing I learned from the book that really opened my eyes was taking proper notes for each of my classes. When it comes to school work it's a lot of information to take in and if you do not take notes properly it's easy for you to forget a lot of what you learned in a day. This is why I followed these three steps from chapter 5 "Taking Notes in Class" which is 1.Sit at the front, 2. Read your textbook in advance of class, and 3. Review your notes soon after class (Langan 92, 96). Sitting in the front of class helps because I can get a clear view of what my instructor is talking about and see the board incredibly good. This mainly helps a lot in my math class for when I'm copying down the example math equations and using them as notes. I also read the next chapter my class will be going over ahead of time and take a few notes for myself so I can get a better understanding of it when we start going over it in class. This method helps me a lot in my American Sign Language (ASL) class. I go over the words and definitions and began putting them on my flash cards to carry on me. The most important thing to do is to review my notes and practice my definitions or math problems with the information I learned. I learned that before I start using these techniques I wasn't taking very good notes, but now I know how to do them the correct way.Kind Heart, Mind and, Soul
Kindness is more than just an act, it is a good sign
It shows the power of love, and a sound mind
It can be a true blessing from god, that's given to you at birth
To which it will create peace, upon heaven and earth
Kindness isn't just something we show
It comes from deep within us, and continue to grow
Kindness is love we have in our flesh and bones
For if you don't feel such love, your heart is as hard as stones
The 3 steps that you mentioned are very helpful! Sitting in the front of the class is so important if you want to be a successful college student!
